Home Evaluations

Evaluators extensively review the home in order to provide the information needed to move forward. Evaluations are detailed, accurate and thorough, following our comprehensive checklist. Parties should provide a detailed list of concerns regarding the home to ensure all concerns are addressed during evaluation. Attorneys for the parents and/or the child may also provide additional information to be addressed during the evaluation. Home evaluations can be done relatively quickly when all parties offer flexible meeting times.

Purpose For The Child

It allows the children to maintain a relationship with both of their parents, something that is generally found to be an important factor in the positive adjustment to family dissolution.

It allows them to anticipate the visits without stress of worrying about what is going to happen and to enjoy them in a safe, comfortable environment without having to be put in the middle of their parents' conflict and/or other problems.

Purpose For The Custodial Parents

You do not have to communicate or have contact with a person with whom you are in conflict or by whom you might be frightened or intimidated. The arrangements can be made by a neutral party (the visit supervisor) and there does not have to be contact before, during, or after the visits.

You can relax and feel comfortable allowing your child to have contact with the other parent-and can get some valuable time to yourself.

Purpose For Non-Custodial Parents

You can be sure that your contact with your children does not have to be interrupted regardless of any problems you may be having with the other parent.

If allegations have been made against you, which is often the case when supervision is ordered, you can visit without fear of any new accusations because there is someone present who can verify what happened during your time together. When using a professional service, you can also be assured that the supervisors are neutral and objective.

In Case of Out-of-Home Placement:

When a child comes under the jurisdiction of child protective services and is removed from the home because of a risk of child abuse or neglect, it is usually important that the parent/child relationship continue. Child Protective Services generally provide these services. However, they may have limited resources that restrict the frequency, duration, and nature of the contact. In some areas, they have found it useful to contract with outside supervised visitation programs to provide services.

In Case of Parental Separation

When parents separate, the children most often will have primary residence with one parent and regularly spend time with the other. When the courts feel it is appropriate, they may order that such visitation take place in the presence of a third party.

Supervised exchanges may be court ordered or arranged by the parent and are generally appropriate when there is no question about the safety of the child but when one or both parents do not feel safe or comfortable interacting directly with the other.

Monitoring Progress

Supervised visitation monitoring involves trained professionals observing and reporting on interactions between a child and a non-custodial parent, ensuring the child's safety and providing data for court review to assess the progress of visitation arrangements.

Data observed in the visits are used to create progress reports which are written and shared with the court or lawyers, including any guardian ad litem.

Any Questions

Supervised visits are designed to ensure that a child can have safe contact with a non-custodial parent without having to be put in the middle of the parent's conflicts or other family issues.
A custodial parent cannot deny visitation rights to the non-custodial parent without a court order or custody agreement.
The location of a supervised visit is determined on what is deemed most appropriate for the child’s safety and well-being by the courts or supervising agency. In some cases, parents maybe involved in this process. Visits may take place in a variety of settings, including the child’s home, the non-custodial parent’s residence, a local visitation center, or public spaces such as parks or restaurants.
If specified in a custody order, you have the right to know your child's location during visitation. However, without a custody order, the other parent isn't legally obligated to disclose the child's whereabouts during their visitation time.
When arranging supervised visits for your child, it is imperative to use someone who is impartial and properly trained, as the reports provided by the supervised visit professional are often used in court proceedings.
During supervised visits, parents must not use drugs or alcohol before or during the visit. They should not arrive under the influence. Additionally, both parents must avoid negative behavior, like gossiping or criticizing the other parent in front of the child, as this can harm the child and may violate a court order.
